2008 Coach Bios


Robert Reeves, Head Coach

The 2008 football season marks Coach Robert Reeves’ 14th year of coaching. His coaching career began at William Blount High School in 1995. He served as Offensive Coordinator and Assistant Head Coach until the end of the 2005 season. In the Summer of 2006, Coach Reeves became the Offensive Passing Game Coordinator for East Paulding High School in Dallas, Georgia where he helped lead the East Paulding Raiders to the Semi-Finals in the Georgia Dome. In the Spring of 2007, Coach Reeves returned to Knoxville to head the Karns Football Program. In addition to his coaching duties, he teaches Government, U.S. History, and Economics. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Columbus State University and a Master’s Degree and Educational Specialist Degree from Lincoln Memorial University. His biggest cheerleader is his wife, Kim, who is employed with the Blount County School System. His parents and his wife’s parents both reside in Blount County and are a great source of encouragement and support.


Jay Whinery, Defensive Coordinator, Linebackers

Coach Whinery was born in Modesto, Ca and it is where his playing and coaching career started. He was a two-sport athlete, football and baseball at Downey High School. His football career continued at Modesto Junior College, where he played for two seasons. Coach Whinery finished playing football in a small school setting, Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa.

Jay had the great opportunity to come home and coach at Downey High. He coached 7 seasons as an assistant for the Knights, 4 of those as the Defensive Coordinator. The next 4 years were spent across town at Grace Davis High, where Coach Whinery held the title of Special Teams Coach. Coach Whinery’s 11 years of experience allowed him the chance to get his first head-coaching job at Valley High School in Sacramento, CA. Two years later he received the Head football position ay Nampa High, outside of Boise, Idaho. Moving closer to family, Coach Whinery spent the last season as an assistant coach at Greenville High School.

Coach Whinery is blessed to have the opportunity to continue his coaching career at Karns High School. Heading into his 20th season as a high school coach he is excited about the opportunity to work with some excellent coaches and great young men!

Jay would like to thank his wife, Robin, and their 2 children Reece and Drew, for allowing him the opportunity to be in this position. Coach Whinery would also like to thank Coach Reeves and Karns High School for this outstanding opportunity.


John Morris, Quarterbacks

Coach John Morris is a native of Dalton, Georgia, where he attended Dalton High School. Coach Morris played college football at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga for one season. Upon leaving UTC, he transferred to Purdue University to continue his education where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering. This is Coach Morris’ fourth year coaching at the High School level. He coached quarterbacks in Indiana for two years before moving to Knoxville. 2006 year was his first year coaching at Karns High School, where he coached the freshman team. In 2007 he coached the quarterback and this season he will again be coaching the quarterbacks. Coach Morris has been involved with the youth football program at Karns since coming to the area. Coach Morris, his wife Donna and two children, Kayla and Keegan, have been a part of the Karns community.


Derek Witt,

Coach Witt is a forth year coach and teacher at Karns High School. His experience in football began at a young age in the Knoxville area, and progressed into a three-year starter on offense and defense in high school. He received several awards, the highest being the honor of All State his senior year. Coach Witt went on to receive his Bachelor’s Degree from East Tennessee State University. He spent several years in industry before deciding to pursue teaching. He and wife, Carrie, have been married for eight years and had their first child last Fall.

Coach Witt began his coaching career at Karns with the start of the 2005 Football season. He has also spent the last two years coaching track at Karns and is currently the Head Men’s Track Coach. This year he will continue in his passion for coaching and enthusiasm for teaching.


John Snyder, Running Backs

Coach Snyder is entering his third year of coaching. He spent his first year working with the quarterbacks at South Doyle High School before coming to Karns to coach. He is a 1999 graduate of South Doyle High School where he played quarterback. He attended Cumberland University on a football scholarship. Coach Snyder was the quarterback for the Bulldogs before receiving his degree in Physical Education. He is a PE teacher at Karns.


Ryan Craig,

This is Coach Craig’s second year coaching. He graduated from William Blount High School in 1998. While playing at William Blount he was coached by Coach Reeves. Ryan went on to Tusculum College on a football scholarship where he played two seasons. Ryan transferred to East Tennessee State University where he received his degree in Science and Technology. Ryan teaches Technology Education at Cedar Bluff Middle School.

Coach Craig has married to Brooke for five years and would like to thank her for all her love and support.


Curtis Newberry,

Coach Newberry’s coaching career began in the Boys Club Sports in AAU Baseball. He was the first coach at Coalfield Middle School. In 2004, he became an assistant football coach at Sunbright High School and the following year Coach Newberry became the Head Football Coach at Sunbright. He also served as the Head Baseball Coach in the 2006 and 2007 seasons. This is Coach Newberry’s first year of coaching at Karns High School.

He graduated from Lincoln Memorial University in 1981 with a B.S. in Business Administration. He earned his teaching certification from Tennessee Tech in 2001.

Coach Newberry is married to Deborah and they have two sons, Joshua David, age 23 and Jacob Daniel, age 18.



This year Coach Tampas will not be helping with the coaching, but will be in charge of all field maintenance for the facilities.

Pete Tampas,

Coach Tampas is a graduate of Carter High School, where he played football from 1976-1979. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1981. He is a decorated veteran, winning numerous military medals and ribbons. He retired as a Chief Petty Officer from the US Navy in 2003. He then served as the Sevier County High School Basketball coach and Karns High School Baseball Assistant Coach. He has coached the Karns Football Team since 2003. Coach Tampas has also served as the Basketball Head Freshmen coach since 2004. He has been a Criminal Justice Instructor at Byington-Solway Career Center and Technical Education Center since 2004. Coach Tampas received his career and Technical Education Certificate from Lincoln Memorial University in 2005. He currently resides in the area with his family. He and his wife, Dayna, have three children, George, Madeline, and James.
